R&D Tax Credit - AEC

The Research and Development tax credit is an excellent financial incentive for architectural, engineering, and construction firms (AEC). These industries frequently engage in activities that could qualify for the credit, such as developing new designs, improving construction methods, enhancing energy efficiency, and integrating sustainable materials.

Activities Evaluated

Knowing which activities can qualify for the R&D credit plays a crucial role in maximizing the tax credit, as documentation and substantiation is key.  The following project phases and activities are commonly performed in the architectural, engineering, and construction industries and can contribute to the advancement and innovation the credit incentives.

Conceptual & Front End Engineering Design - The early stage planning that defines project scope feasibility and cost estimates. It helps stakeholders make informed decisions before committing to full scale development.

Civil Structural & Architectural Design - Covers the planning and execution of building frameworks, infrastructure, and aesthetic elements. It plays a crucial role in ensuring safety, functionality, and compliance with regulations.

Detailed Engineering & 3D Modeling -  This phase refines initial designs into precise technical drawings and 3D models. It ensures accuracy in construction, improves visualization, and helps detect potential design conflicts early on.

Control Systems & Engineering - Involves designing automation and monitoring systems for buildings and industrial facilities. It enhances efficiency, reduces operational costs, and improves system reliability

Process Safety & Technical Safety Design - Focuses on risk mitigation and compliance with safety standards. It ensures that engineering solutions minimize hazards and protect both workers and the surrounding environment.

Asset Lifecycle Management & Project Controls - Focuses on long term maintenance optimization and cost control of infrastructure and facilities. It helps maximize asset value and operational efficiency.

Commissioning & Startup Services - Ensures that newly constructed facilities function as intended before full scale operations begin. It includes testing equipment, verifying system performance, and troubleshooting issues.

Cost Calculations

Cost categories play a crucial role in maximizing the R&D tax credit by ensuring that businesses capture all eligible expenses. Below are some examples of expenses that need to be evaluated.

Wages - Salaries paid to employees engaged in qualified research activities such as engineers, designers, and technical staff. This also includes those who directly supervise or support research efforts.

Materials and Supplies -  Costs associated with prototype development, testing, and experimentation. This includes raw materials used in creating new designs or improving existing processes.

Contract Research - Payments made to external consultants or specialists who contribute to research and development efforts. Typically a percentage of these costs can be claimed under the credit.

Computer Rental and Software - Expenses related to specialized software and cloud computing services used for research activities. This is particularly relevant for firms engaged in modeling simulation and data analysis.
